A SIMPLE WOODEN CROSS

When my days have come and gone

And I am laid rest

Put me not in a field of stone

But heed my last request

Lay me in a valley green

Where trees and flowers thrive

For this is where I wanted to be

When my body was alive

Take no thought of slate with words

Chiseled on it’s face

Just leave a simple wooden cross

There in my favorite place

And when the north wind blows so cold

On dark nights in your heart

My spirit always stays with you

From you will never part

For I am there and everywhere

Not under sod and moss

The only thing that’s left there now

Is a simple wooden cross
